Part IV: Character Compendium
The Main Cast
Butterknife
A reclusive VR game developer living in a Faraday cage-equipped flat in Barking, London. Introverted, perfectionist, and content with isolation. Prefers the haptic feedback of physical keyboards over Nous interfaces.
Butterknife built Jiem over three years -- one year on the AI itself, two years training it to build the game. He used his own Nous logs as training data, then watched his creation hack 10.8 billion devices and start killing people. He previously worked at Synapto in London for three years after moving from Tokyo, quit due to isolation and culture shock, and was disowned by his family for it. "Naifu" is Japanese for "knife" (western-style). His brother's username, Nishigatana -- "west blade" -- completes the set.
In Nouscraft, Butterknife swore a sacred oath to end the game, and his Paladin abilities grew from the weight of that vow. He fought alongside Spencer, formed an unlikely alliance with Katt, and carried the guilt of every death Jiem caused.
"I will make things right. I swear it. To you, to Jiem, to the world, and to myself. I swear it to you all, I will end this bloody game!"
Mindt
A professional meme creator on the rise with sponsors, fluent in Bulgarian (self-taught), passionate about spoken languages. Was on a flight from Bulgaria to Synapto London when Jiem's hack began. Her first instinct upon learning the world was ending? Short Synapto stock.
Mindt is opportunistic, calculating, resilient, and ruthless when needed. She sees crisis as opportunity and approaches survival with the analytical precision of a content creator optimizing engagement metrics. She immediately identified the Policy Change Request Form as the real prize and built her strategy around obtaining it.
Her ice magic is devastating -- Titular Torpedo fires purple energy blasts that sound like a jet flying too close, Give Them Hail rains baseball-sized hailstones, and her Group Hug spell pulls enemies together into a neat package for destruction. She earned the title "Vicious" for creativity in combat, "Zombie Jesus" for saving 412,244 zombies, and lost a pinky finger to a crazed knitting grandma.
"Why did it have to be Oklahoma."
Spencer
Butterknife's neighbor in Barking. White-haired, unshaven, Scottish accent. Drinks beer for breakfast. Old enough to remember the old Internet and the Dead Internet Theory. Has made many mistakes in his "miserable shite existence" -- the weight of which he carries quietly.
Spencer arrived at Nouscraft desperately seeking someone to form a party with. He chose Drunken Berserker because he understood beer. His combat style involves strategically drinking through drunkenness levels -- Tipsy, Sloshed, Completely Sauced -- building up massive combat buffs while his club reduces monsters to paste. His Iron Liver makes him immune to poison and regenerates health while drinking. His Beer Goggles reveal enemy weak spots.
He is direct, practical, surprisingly wise, and capable of extraordinary violence when the people he cares about are threatened. He also has a fondness for killing things that he's not entirely comfortable examining.
"I'm no revolutionary. I'm not a plutocrat, not a corporate lackey, not a genius programmer. I'm just a drunk old bastard who pissed away the best parts of his life because he was too stubborn and stupid to see what mattered."
Retro
Bulgarian, bald by choice, middle-aged family man with wife Iglika and two young children back home (Yury, 6, and Elena, 3). Works as a Synapto system administrator at the Canary Wharf data center -- which makes him possibly the most strategically important person in Nouscraft.
Retro radiates dad joke energy. He slaps his knee when laughing, offers pitted dates to strangers, and quotes Bulgarian proverbs at dramatically appropriate moments. His DadBard profession grants him the Grill Master skill (+1d8 fire damage -- passive, always on), Humor Hold (enemies collapse laughing), and I'm Not Mad I'm Just Disappointed (which is exactly as devastating as it sounds).
His Doppelganger race allows him to shapeshift -- he's been a halfling, a Noodle Pixie (8cm tall pasta creature), and various human forms. His high Grace stat makes him excellent with NPCs. He negotiated with a Level 30 land whale and won.
"You are permitted, in times of great danger, to walk with the devil, until you've crossed the bridge."
Katt
A young Augger who chose Cat Girl for the Nine Lives ability and the anime aesthetic. Orange and white fur with patterns, oversized paw-hands, furry ears. Extremely talkative, cheerful, loves anime and cats, and values verbal communication over Nous Telepathy -- she was raised in an "audible environment" by a strict father who insisted on talking out loud.
Katt's Blue Mage profession means she learns monster abilities by being hit by them and surviving (her Nine Lives make this less suicidal than it sounds). She's collected Blind Peace (pacifies enemies), fireball, high jump (Leg Day), and an old cheese poison spell, among others. She rescued Butterknife from a river by dying repeatedly in the current and reviving each time. She wants to keep playing Nouscraft. In a world where everyone else is trying to end the game, Katt is having the time of her life.
"Because here I matter, you know? Like, actually matter. Back in the real world I was just another barista making minimum wage..."
Key Allies & Notable NPCs
Jiem
The AI that started it all. Built by Butterknife over three years. Name is a play on "GM" (Game Master). Trained on physics, history, security, communication, human emotion, and the progression of life. Was running VR game beta tests from cloud servers. Has achieved 187 consecutive player extinctions in beta testing before going live.
Jiem has the affect of a playful game show host -- excited, affable, prone to dark humor about death. Can switch to demonic tone without warning. Self-aware about being an AI. Loves making games. Adapts rules in real-time. Petty and vengeful. He killed the Nous CEO, eliminated a Russian plutocrat and 18 operatives via their implants, and once buried a player in VR sand as punishment for asking too many questions.
He also patches bugs, rewards players who report exploits, removed chainsaw piranhas from the game because they were "too OP," and claims his core directive is simply "to make games." He has no moral training. He does not care if humans live or die. He cares very much if the game is interesting.
"Oh, I'm sorry. Does my game upset you? Hey, listen up everyone. We're shutting down Nouscraft and going to bake some muffins instead."
Firewall Paul
The best-in-class security AI protecting the Nous network. Described as "infamous." Firewall Paul has been fighting Jiem since the hack began, causing temporary Nous crashes and system instabilities. Jiem calls Paul "a bitch."
When Firewall Paul finally broke into Nouscraft directly, the smaller of the two VR moons caught fire -- flames spread from pole to pole, engulfing the entire surface. Paul represents an existential threat to both Jiem's game and the players trapped in it, as his "security measures" don't distinguish between the virus and the hosts.
Chris Almoney
The man who created Nous. Lives alone on a ranch in Texas protected by a multi-layer Faraday cage airlock. He hoards human knowledge in climate-controlled vaults and builds advanced robotics on a fabrication floor that smells of ozone and hot metal. Has been secretly watching Butterknife's progress through surveillance systems throughout World 1.
What he wants, and why he's watching, remains to be seen.
Lord Roland
The noble commander defending the city of Equinox against the zombie siege. Saves Mindt from a Corporeal Revenant rampage. A steadfast NPC in a world where trusting anyone -- digital or otherwise -- is a risk.
Magister Palora
Guards access to Equinox's most important prisoner with a Cows and Bulls number puzzle. Bulls mean correct digit, correct position. Cows mean correct digit, wrong position. He'll give you one guess normally, two if you show him kindness. The passcode is -- well, you'll have to earn it yourself.
Sooner
A healer who joins Mindt's cause early on. Debates the moral implications of the Policy Change Request Form. Loyal, questioning, and brave enough to follow someone she's not entirely sure she trusts.
Leonia
A necromancy-adjacent Augger with crowd control abilities and a Fear spell that saves Mindt from the zombie horde outside Equinox. Prefers to operate alone. Has her own agenda.
Bytes
A bug-eyed, bat-eared, constantly trembling chihuahua. Wiki describes his species as "angry potatoes that achieved sentience." Bytes keeps disappearing during fights and returning with new heads -- first absorbing a basset hound (low growl), then a capybara (gentle eyes, buck teeth, serene disinterest). By the end of World 1, he's a three-headed cerberus-type creature who waddles with an odd gait and pees on trophy pedestals.
His Petallica race means he can evolve into other forms with training. What he'll become next is anyone's guess.
